AI Customer Support: Why Tech Giants Still Get It Wrong

The Frustration of Calling an AI Company

Imagine trying to resolve a simple billing issue: an old ChatGPT business account was still charging $145 a month despite being closed. Naturally, the next logical step was to call support.

An AI voice assistant answered the call. While conversational voice AI has massive potential, the interaction unraveled the moment the problem required actual nuance:

  • Misunderstood intent and constant interruptions
  • Robotic, delayed turn-taking
  • A deflective resolution: “Look for an email in 2–3 days”
  • No option to transfer to a human agent

Trying to reach Meta proved even worse—there was no phone number available at all, only email support.

Engineers vs. Operators: Two Different Mindsets

Investors frequently ask what happens when tech giants like OpenAI, Google, Microsoft, Anthropic, or Meta compete directly in the conversational voice AI space. The simplest test is straightforward: try calling their support lines.

Building frontier agentic AI models and delivering exceptional customer support are two fundamentally different challenges. Engineering teams at giant tech firms typically optimize for:

  • Call deflection
  • Ticket automation
  • Volume reduction

Operators, on the other hand, think from the perspective of the person on the other end of the line—someone who simply needs to know why they are still being charged for a canceled subscription and wants an immediate answer.

Designing Conversational AI for Real Solutions

Voice AI shouldn’t just be built to sound impressive during a demo; it must be engineered to make conversations feel completely natural while actively resolving complex problems. High-performing conversational systems achieve benchmarks such as:

  • 98% self-service resolution
  • Under 300ms turn-taking latency
  • Less than 1% of callers asking if they are speaking to AI

The true test of conversational AI isn’t novelty—it is invisible utility. The real magic happens when a customer doesn’t even care whether they spoke to a human or an AI because their issue was resolved on the spot.

Setting a Higher Standard for Customer Experience

If a enterprise builds technology that represents the frontier of its category, its own customer service experience should reflect that standard. When industry leaders struggle to deploy effective AI support for their own users, it creates a massive opportunity for focused operators to redefine how businesses handle customer support.
